Ensemble, 2006, flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, double bass, computer, 5'31"

Recorded at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, 26 November 2006

In Ensemble the instrumentalists state a slow sequence of block-like chords, while a computer operator records short samples of the performed material and then replays a modulated version a moment later, so that the electronic replay overhangs each of the following instrumental block. This procedure creates a chain-like sequence which gradually shifts out of step, while the replayed material continues to float, as if the ‘live’ instrumental music has been suspended, like a memory of itself. The replay shifts, panning slowly and rhythmically, and varying in speed from moment to moment depending the internal content of each chord. So, from the very beginning, we hear each performed moment together with a re-presentation of itself.
